Fresh Start Monday #046: Laziness is a clue, not something to fix

Last week, I had a sales call with a potential client that was looking for an accountability coach. In his initial message, he talked about growing his business, but his effort didn't match his ambition. He wanted to hire me to overcome his laziness.

I often see headlines on social media platforms like how to be more productive, habits to get more things done, and how to be more disciplined. We treat laziness or not getting work done as something to fix.

Instead, we should seek to understand it.

We may think there's something wrong with us. Or that we "should" be able to get it done.

When I probed this potential client about the business he's building, I found out it had nothing to do with his long-term dreams. He simply didn't care. Keeping him accountable was the surface level problem.

It felt like he was stuck in an intermediate phase and scared of going after what he truly wanted to do.

Another common one I see in my clients is continuing to go after an old dream. Clinging to what we once wanted.

If you're having trouble completing a task or not feeling motivated, get curious. I wonder why that is.

A quote from James Clear:

Excitement is a better motivator than discipline. The people who appear to have an exceptional work ethic or remarkable discipline are often those with a genuine curiosity or interest in that area. The person who smiles is more likely to keep working than the person gritting their teeth.

Forcing yourself to do the work or through something has a short shelf life.

As my new client and I explore the laziness he's feeling in his life, reflect on the laziness or lack of motivation in your own life. Ask yourself, what's behind it?
