Fresh Start Monday #003: How you do anything is how you everything
The habits we downplay,
Stay silent in the present day,
Until one day, we're in disarray.
I have a client at work. We meet on a weekly cadence. A few weeks ago, our project was on schedule. I hadn't logged notes for three weeks. Nobody took notice.
I took two days off. The Account Manager needed to contact the client and couldn't reference our current status.
The information gap didn't allow a colleague to perform their job and created uncertainty in a project going well.
And well, I felt like crap.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
How can I expect to document and keep track of all my coaching clients when I have a well-grooved trail of bad habits? It's like walking in the snow. Without thinking, we put our heads down and follow the footsteps in the snow we've made before.
But, we can follow tracks left behind from other parts of our lives.
Before we find them, I came up with three other areas in my life where I'm failing to keep track:
1. Training progress at the gym
2. Coaching hours log
3. Meditation sessions
Our habits are interconnected and feed off each other. We don't get to pick and choose.
Last week, I set a calendar event to record notes at the end of each day. It gave me structure by signaling the end of my work day.
Yet, daily repetitive tasks drain me. By Thursday, I'm going, "I have to do this again?"
Fresh Start Monday:
Now, how do I find that other set of footprints?
I used how you do anything is how you do everything to find a solution.
What's worked well for me when I get tired of a daily activity?
I don't like making lunch/dinner every day of the week. I might start the week strong, but I'm going out to eat by Thursday.
I solved this by Sunday meal prep. I batch all the prep and cooking on one day for the week.
This week, I'm setting a calendar event for 30min on Friday afternoon. I'm batching my client meeting notes for work and coaching together.
The Friday timing is significant because I want the reward of ending my workweek.
Habits crumble without rewards.
What are the patterns you see in your life?
What solution can you take from a different part of your life?
